Welcome To The

The Church is that unique community of people,
Called into being by God,
Nurtured,
Sustained,
and Empowered
By the Holy Spirit;
Whose purpose it is to
Study,
to Share,
and to Serve,
Together,
in the World,
in the Name of Jesus Christ.
Huguenot Memorial Church is a member congregation of the Presbyterian Church (U.S.A.),
seeking to live out the implications of that definition in program and mission, for the
people of Pelham, the surrounding communities, and the world.

 WHO/WHAT ARE PRESBYTERIANS?

The word, "presbyterian," is derived from a Greek word presbutays meaning old or elderly man! Hence the term, Elder, which is an important part of our Presbyterian vocabulary.

Historically, in our Judeo-Christian tradition, old men or elders were respected (even revered) for their maturity and wisdom; and were often called upon to offer advice and counsel, to arbitrate disputes, etc.

Once upon a time, not that long ago, we Presbyterians spoke of Teaching Elders and Ruling Elders.  In so doing, we emphasized a parity in status, but a difference in function, between Ministers (Teaching Elders) and Elders (Ruling Elders).

Even now, our Constitution specifies that there are two categories of officers in the Presbyterian Church (USA), namely Presbyters (that is to say, Ministers of the Word and Sacrament and Elders) and Deacons [Book of Order G-6.0103].
