Huguenot Memorial Church

Local and Global Mission

The Mission Committee is continually striving to provide opportunities and the means for reaching out to the needs of the local community, as well as expanding to the far reaches of the globe. We provide monetary donations and/or assistance to both local and world-wide non-profit organizations who share our mission of reaching out to the poor and needy, and who may provide skills which will enable them to break the cycle of poverty.

Programs at Huguenot

Camp Viva Reunions
Camp Viva is a Family Services of Westchester program for families who have an individual infected with HIV/AIDS. This wonderful camp is located in Rhinebeck, and the campers and volunteers gather several times a year to keep in contact. Huguenot has hosted these reunions since 2006. Over 100 campers descend upon Huguenot's gymnasium and enjoy food, games, arts/crafts and seasonally, a visit from Santa. Our senior high and middle school youth groups especially help with the Holiday Reunion.

Thanksgiving in a Box
Our Deacons have been graciously organizing this event. Members of the congregation collect food items for a family of 8 which are then distributed to immigrant families living in the Port Chester area. We also have delivered food to families in the Head Start program of White Plains. In 2007 we were able to serve 44 families.

Archway Tree
During the Advent season a Christmas tree is placed in the Church with the name of a child who has been identified by the Archway Program as an at-risk child. Archway is an alcoholism treatment program that sponsors youth groups for children whose parents are recovering alcoholics, problem drinkers or drug addicts. We have also collected presents for a half-way house for male teenagers. Over 50 children and youth are served.

Midnight Run
Once a month, youth and adults alike collect food and clothing and deliver it to the homeless in New York City.

Arlene Shaw Lecture Series for Peace and Justice
This series of 4 lectures is open to the congregation and community with topics such as world-wide travesties, environmental issues, and other pertinent subjects that may have an impact on all of our lives. Suggestions for lectures and lecturers are always welcome.

God's Love We Deliver
God's Love We Deliver (GLWD) is a wonderful organization located in Manhattan, created to "improve the health and well-being of men, women, and children living with HIV/AIDS and other serious illness by alleviating hunger and malnutrition." In addition to providing nutritious meals to those who are unable to provide or prepare for themselves, GLWD provides education and counseling. These services are all provided free of charge. Members of Huguenot church have been volunteering to deliver food for several years to the Bronx residents for Thanksgiving and Christmas. Families are welcome. Contact David Christmas at 212-294-8160.

Meals Prepared for HOPE Community Soup Kitchen
Three evenings a week, every week of the year, HOPE's kitchen serves hot, nutritious meals to all whose hunger leads them to our door - senior citizens, parents with children, the unemployed, the homeless. In HOPE's two decades of life an astounding 9 million meals have been served through the kitchen and pantry. Huguenot members sign up to prepare meals once/month. Contact Katie Kleiner for more information, at kmdewar_51@hotmail.com

This fun, highly anticipated annual event combines the yearly decorating of one's home with giving. Trees, garland, wreaths, poinsettias, plus crafts and gifts from Developing World countries are available for sale. Proceeds of this event benefit designated local charities.

Presbyterian Church/USA Mission Programs

Huguenot Church generously supports the four special offerings of our denomination. 100% of the first two described below are sent directly to our national church offices.

* One Great Hour of Sharing (Lent/Easter) provides assistance here and abroad to victims of hunger, poverty and natural disasters (through the Presbyterian Hunger and Disaster Assistance Programs), and operates The Self-Development of People program.

* The Christmas JOY Offering supplements the income of retired church workers and their families who were employed when retirement benefits were inadequate, and it assists racial/ethnic students at Presbyterian colleges and universities who qualify on an as-needed basis for scholarship help.

* The Pentecost Offering is devoted to programs which help children, youth and young adults in our society who are classified "at risk." 40% of the offering is administered by local congregations; 60% helps finance such programs at the national level.

* The Peacemaking Offering (World Communion Sunday in October) finances peace and justice efforts at local, regional and national levels. 25% is used by our church for local programs; 25% is used by the Presbytery of Hudson River and Synod of the Northeast; and 50% is used by General Assembly's Presbyterian Peacemaking Program for national and international programs.
