We believe that eating together as a family, church and community is very important. It has become difficult in our society to feel connected to others. Families move more often; parents work longer hours; children have many after-school activities. It is sustaining for each of us to be part of something larger than ourselves, to interact with others. For many of us, being a member of a congregation that shares our beliefs helps to confirm and develop our faith. There are many opportunities for gathering together around a table for a meal or food in the events that mark our Christian lives. Many of our rites of passage, such as baptism, confirmation, weddings and funerals, are occasions for sharing food together as a family and a community. Sunday dinners are often when we make the time to sit down to eat with those we care about. Members of the church community often develop lasting bonds and a sense of community from the many occasions when food is served to larger crowds at the church. A breakfast to mark the start of fall services, the church picnic, a potluck after a concert and, of course, coffee hour after the service, all help to cement our relationships.

Hands Around the Table is a collection of menus, recipes and traditions from the people who participate in the life of the Huguenot Memorial Church. This cookbook is unique for a number of reasons. It is organized around the events of a church calendar, providing menus and ideas on what to serve for Christmas, Easter, weddings, baptisms, a church picnic, Sunday suppers and other occasions. Each section includes traditions of various families as well as ideas on how to celebrate and gather together, perhaps leading to new traditions of your own. Finally, special attention is given to cooking with and for your children, who have their own section devoted to baking, menus, recipes and food related activities. There is also an advent calendar for children centred on food.


This cookbook reflects the tastes and experiences of a wide group of people. It includes menus and recipes from young families and grandparents, as well as contributions from cooks who like things simple, to people who enjoy preparing elaborate meals.

The recipes in this book have not been tried in a laboratory. But their merit has been tested by those who are generously sharing their recipes with you. We hope that you enjoy the ideas and recipes in this cookbook as much as we do!
