Church
School classes
Christian
education for preschoolers through senior high school-age youth is
held each Sunday, September – June, during the latter part of the worship
service. Children are dismissed to classes from worship after the
children’s “Church Chat.”
The
Church School curriculum is carefully selected to be age-appropriate and
to teach children Bible truths and Christian values. Younger children
learn Bible stories and learn about God’s creation, God’s continued activity
in the world, and God’s overwhelming love for them. By learning about
Jesus, and listening to the stories Jesus told, children learn the values
of love, kindness, forgiveness, caring, and sharing. Older elementary
children learn about the Bible: how the Bible came to be, how the
books of the Bible are arranged, and how the Bible is God’s word for our
lives today. By the end of the fifth grade, all children should know
the Doxology, the Lord’s Prayer, the 23rd Psalm, the Ten Commandments,
the Books of the Bible, the Apostles Creed, and familiar hymns.
Children’s
Choirs
Through
music children learn Bible truths and learn to praise God. They discover
how they can use their own abilities to enrich the worship experience for
the congregation.
Vacation
Church School
A
Vacation Church School program is held one week in the summer for children
who are 3 years old through Grade 4. At Vacation Church children learn
Bible stories and Bible truths in a style similar to summer camp. This
is a special time of singing, storytelling, crafts, recreation, and snacks.
Children’s
Chapel
Each
Sunday of Church School, children in Kindergarten through Grade 5 have
a brief program in the Chapel before going to Church School classes.
In Chapel children learn about worship, the sacraments (baptism, communion),
the Lord’s Prayer, the seasons of the Church year, and the mission of the
Church. At every Chapel program, the children sing a hymn or song
related to the lesson of the day.
Special
Events
Throughout
the year, special events give children an opportunity for “hands-on” experiences
which teach them about Bible stories and the mission of the Church.
Some special events are the Christmas pageant, the Thanksgiving Dinner,
“Hands Across the Hutch” (environmental clean-up), and Christmas caring
projects.
